Why
islands?
Islands
have their own, very special atmosphere. Surrounded by the sea they
form independent units, that have close ties to the natural forces around
them. The number of islands is limited, which makes them countable.
Despite relative closeness of many islands to the mainland coast, island
visitors might get the impression that they are far away from mainland
daily routines.
Island
runs
Island runs are attractive to many runners: The route
of many island runs leads from coast to coast across the whole island,
partly routes loop around an entire island. Running with or against
the wind, on the beach, across dunes Dünen, with a magnificent
view over the sea - everybody will have his/her own reasons to like
(or dislike) island runs.
Hunters
and Collectors
No doubt, collecting seems to be part of the human genes. There are
so many collectables - beer cans, newspapers, stamps... Why not island
runs? There are many islands, true, but the number of island runs is
nevertheless countable, so that there is a genuine chance that an island
run collection reaches a satisfying completeness for certain regions.

...and
what is an 'island'?
One might define an island as a piece of land surrounded by the sea.
Unfortunately, this also includes extremely large areas like Australia,
the British main island, or even Antarctica, which I prefer not to include
in this island listing because they don't really fall into the same
category as the many small islands. Naturally, there isn't a well-defined
cut-off value for the maximum acceptable island size, so here also large
islands such as Bali and the North Island of New Zealand are partly
included. A bit inconsistent, yes, but maybe a way to do it for the
time being.
